Wonderful Kyoto

Hello.

In the last minute of my life in Japan, I decided to do spring vacation after finishing all classes and tasks. One of the place that I've visited is Kyoto. Many people recommend this city to be visited. and yes! I love it already. Kyoto was gorgeous. There are a lot of temples and historical sites. Also, this is heaven for matcha lovers. Plenty of beautiful words may describe this place somehow. However, you should experience it by yourself and you’ll not regret. Trust me :)

Music Box

Hello everybody!
Do you enjoy the cold of winter?

Probably most of you already visited Otaru. Yes, Otaru is a romantic city located in northwest of Sapporo. However, I don’t wanna talk about the city or the landscape. There is another thing that has stolen my mind, music box! Many people know that Otaru also best known for its music box or orgel. I really interested in music so I will not miss this special music box from Otaru ☺
Music Box

Music box actually is a kind of ancient technology. The principle of working is like phonograph. It is consisted of music sheet and the player. When we spin the handle, the music box will play a song as if we play CD on the CD player. The music sheet is made of metal that consisted of knobs and work as a music programmer. This music sheet usually placed in a revolvable drum so the music will played when you spin the handle. If you look into the music sheet, the knobs looks as if it's irregular, but it’s actually kind of program that represents the music notes. Then, the player is like a metal comb consisted of needles. The needles will touch the knob from the music sheet and play the notes as if when we are playing a piano while looking at the musical score. If you’re really wanna know and curious about the inside of the music box, you can check out this old video ☺

I was amazed with such this modest technology can produce a beautiful harmony. I hope through the PARE program, we can collaborate to make a harmony world even in a very modest way.

Thanks for reading.

Winter and New Year Activities

December 28, 2014.

Sapporo.

December 23 is holiday. Some PARE students and me have great opportunity to join winter and New Year activities with some Asian students. The activities were consisted of 3 parts.

First part is walking ski and rafting. In the morning, we can try walking on the snow by using ski shoes. It is very easy and interesting. It is not dangerous as I imagine.

Walking ski
Then, after ski walking we can try snow rafting. We are sitting on the boat while a jet ski drags us on the snow. We can feel the snowflakes hitting our face while on the boat. We wanna faster speed!
Snow rafting

At noon, we're served with Japanese New Year's dishes named Osechi Ryouri (おせちりょうり). Every element in the dishes is meaningful. It’s very healthy and delicious (おせち料理は健康で、おいしかったです).

The last session is picture letter drawing, named Etegami (えてがみ). We're taught how to make えてがみ. えてがみ is a postcard containing picture and message. I'm bad at drawings but I try my best. がんばりましょう。

Winter Trip

Minna-san konnichiwa. This is ulfi writings :)

Konnichiwa!

November 29, 2014.

This saturday, I visited some places in Hokkaido as part of my winter trip. I was going to Shiraoi Ainu Museum Porotokotan, Noboribetsu Date Jidai Mura and Jigokudani Valley in Noboribetsu City. Noboribetsu City is located 120 km southwest  Sapporo. It takes around 1 hour 30 minutes from Sapporo by bus.

This trip is started very early in the morning. Gather at 7 a.m in Kita 14 Nishi 3, the trip was supported by Indonesian Student Association (PPI). However, we can invite our foreign friends to join this trip. Unfortunately, I join this trip suddenly so I don’t invite my foreign friends :(

Our first destination of this trip is Shiraoi Ainu Museum Porotokotan. The entrance fee for this place is ¥700 for adult. Here, we can see learn about Ainu’s culture through seeing their house and its appliance and furniture, watching their activities, and even you can try Ainu’s clothes and take picture. To take picture wearing Ainu’s clothes takes cost ¥400 (if I am not mistaken), but I’m not trying this clothes because I don’t have a lot of money. Poor me! Haha. By the way, The Ainu or the Aynu (Ainu アィヌ Aynu; Japanese: アイヌ Ainu; Russian: АйныAjny) are an indigenous people of Japan (Hokkaido, and formerly northeastern Honshu) and Russia (Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands).

Okay, next destination is Noboribetsu Date Jidai Mura. This place has many attractions such as Ninja show, Samurai show, Geisha show and so on. Also, this place itself is very attractive because it has beautiful landscape to take photograph. I enjoy all of the show they're offered. I e Ninja’s hiding on their secret room, Samurai’s fighting, and also beautiful Geisha, きれいですね! Here’s the gallery of the show :)

After enjoying all of the show, it’s a must to take many pictures here. I don’t wanna miss a thing :p Umm.. well this experience is not cheap. It cost ¥2500 for adult to enter this place haha. Money doesn’t lie!

Noboribetsu Date Jidai Mura Landscape

And the final destination is Jigokudani Valley. This place is natural hot springs area. No entrance fee for this place. Horrayy! You can enjoy the beautiful panoramic here. Also you can try foot bath in natural hot water for free. After you’re tired of walking, it’s very nice to soak your barefoot to the hot water, especially in this such cold weather. It’s very relaxing! If it's not enough for you, you can try onsen in the hotel around here, but of course you have to pay for this. haha

Jigokudani Valley

After whole day trip, finally I get back to Sapporo around 7.30 p.m. My body was very tired, but my mind’s get relaxing so much. What unforgettable moment!

Keep warm and relax guys! Cheers.

Classical Economics

Sunday on November 23 was a marvellous days.
On this day, I experience unusual new things in Hokkaido.

In the morning, from 10 a.m to 1 p.m., me and my friends have discussions about economics, which is something I am not too interested, with representative of Indonesia Bank in East Asia Region. They travel from Tokyo to Sapporo and tell us about recent economic development in Indonesia. Not only that, we also have great discussion about our latest economics issue in our country. Even though I am not studying economics and not think too much about economics, I feel that day discussion was interesting. We don’t use difficult term of economics (because none of member of discussion from Economics major), we were talking about socio-economics, comparison between economics in Japan and in our country, and other interesting issues. I like this ways of learning, talking about recent issues, having discussions both positive or negative side, and after discussions my brain starts thinking many ideas about future. This discussion has turn around the uninteresting economics topics to a fascinating one. Also, it's like take me back to PARE summer program, which we always talking about recent issues and having discussions :)

After the discussion finished, we were going to “Potpourri Concert” (katakana). It is classical music concert held in Hokkaido University Museum starting from 2 p.m. This is also engrossing me because this is my first time going to a classical music concert. I enjoy every song they played, but unfortunately I can’t stay in the hall until finished because the capacity of the room is not enough so I have to stand up along the show if I want to enjoy the concert. But I think probably some people can not see clearly if I stand up so I decided to get out from the concert :( This is the video of the concert. Enjoy!

Warm regards,

Fly Ash

Hello everybody! I hope you still warm even in this cold weather :)

Now I will tell you about what I do in my laboratory. My laboratory is solid waste disposal engineering laboratory. This laboratory is located on Faculty of Engineering Building, Section A, 5th floor, room number A5-58.

In this laboratory, I belong to incineration system research group. Specifically, I study about fly ash. What is fly ash? Fly ash is residue that generated from incineration (burning) process of waste along with the flue (exhaust) gases. The appearance of fly ash is just like ordinary dust. But be careful! This dust has various size from 5 to 300 µm and maybe it will cause health problem if you inhale the very small size particles.

Fly ash (U.S. Concrete, 2011)

Considering this health risk, you will not see this dust (fly ash) is released from the chimney of the incineration plant in Japan. Fly ash cannot be released into the environment through the chimney because it will cause air pollution. So, the fly ash should be trapped in an equipment to be disposed later in the landfill. The fly ash is trapped in some kind of device called air pollution control.

My experiment is to investigate the characteristics of the fly ash. This week I investigate about physical characteristics of the fly ash. I analyze the density of the fly ash by weigh the weight of the fly ash and measure the volume of the fly ash. Moreover, I analyze about the compressibility of the fly ash.

This is all I can say to you this time. See you.

The "Waste Land" Moerenuma Park

October 26, 2014

Last weekend on Sunday (October 26, 2014) I went to Moerenuma Park. It is located in Moerenuma-koen 1-1, Higashi-ku, Sapporo. I went there by bicycle with my PARE friends Nisa, Saki, Tomoya and Yunita.

We started our journey from International House Kita 23 Building 2, Kita 23-jo Nishi 13-chome, Kita-ku, Sapporo 001-0023. We rode about 13 km of one-way distance from our dormitory, so totally we rode about 26 km that day (if refers to google maps :p). I expect losing much of calories that day. What a fun sports! :D

Bicyle Route
I waMoerenuma Park is a big park which has 1,888,000 m² of its area and consist of 16 facilities that is : Glass Pyramid, Cherry Forest, Moere Beach, Play Mountain, Tetra Mound, Music Shell, Aqua Plaza, Canal, Open-air Theater, Mt Moere, Larch Forest, Central Fountain, Open Space, Track and Field Ground, Ballpark, and tennis courts. [1] Unfortunately, we could not enjoy all of the facilities because the sky has getting dark :( and also we can not enjoy the open-air theater and central fountain because these facilities only opened in summer season.
Glass Pyramid
Play Mountain
Mt. Moere
Open-air Theater
Geometry Shape in the Moerenuma Park

All of these facilities reflect one of four basic forms that consist of three geometrical shapes, such as circle, triangle, and quadrangle. [2] Why he choose geometry shape? Probably you think about mathematics if you heard “geometry” word. People with the culture of Chinese characters tend to get the mathematic impression from the word "geometry" because of its Chinese characters and sound (Kikagaku which means geometry in Japanese came from Chinese transliteration). [2] On the other hand, Mr. Noguchi is an English speaker (his father is Japanese but his mother is American), so "geo" means earth, "met" means to measure, and "ry" means art. [2] Probably through the “geometry” concept, he want to deliver a message of “measuring the art of earth” through the park. :)

Moerenuma Park was designed by Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988). [2] The area named “Moere” was chosen by Mr. Noguchi as his workshop. The word "moere" means "tranquil water surface" in the Ainu language and the area remained a very quiet area until about a quarter of a century ago. [2]

Why I named my post as "waste land"?
Besides the beautiful scenery of this place, the most interesting things about this place is that it was a landfill before constructed as a park. Landfill is a place to dispose of refuse and other waste material by burying it and covering it over with soil. [3] Are you imagining that we are standing at the top of the garbage pile? Of course not! It was long time ago :) According to the document of “The Moerenuma Park and Isamu Noguchi”, this area is used for landfill since 1978 and closed in 1982. [2] And also, this area was a landfill for non-combustible (non-burnable) waste and waste from incineration. [2]
It was very fun and happy to enjoy one of beautiful natures in Sapporo and it is very interesting while we also know about the story of its place. I would say thank you very much to Nisa, Saki, Tomoya and Yunita that has beautify my autumn :)
