Amazing time in Thailand spring school 2016

Hello everyone~~ 😆  This is Satoka, a student of PARE spring school 2016.
We hokudai students just came back from Thailand last Wednesday, I still can't stand this low temperature in Sapporo, even I am a Dosanko !(Dosanko is who borned and grow in Hokkaido)

From March 6th ~ 22th, it was amazing time ....
First week, we had many lectures and discussion and presentation at Kasetsart University . It was great experience to share the ideas and present in front of other groups, I was inspired a lot from other student's way of thinking.

Next week, we went to field trip along Mae Klong river to do water sampling, also we visited some place like; dams, irrigation center, rice center, SIIT.... Everyday was full of activities, that's why I could sleep well every night.
Thai food is very delicious. especially I like Thai custard with fried something !

Not only from lectures but also through field work, communication with other students, I learned a lot about the water management situation/solution in Thailand.

I am very very happy to be able to attend this program as my very first time to study abroad with international students. Every students is smart, funny, crazy, kind and friendly.

Thank you for teaching me a lot of cultures, languages....
Hope to meet you again in the future.

I love pare students💖

Recent report and fieldtrip

Hello.
About a week ago, we finished our all experiments, calculated the results and discussed with helper laboratorians and professor Mr.Suwardi. There are less strange data, so I was relieved a little...

By the way, today, I went to "Pangalaengan" which situates at south of Bandun, central west Java, mountainous area. I went there with professor Mr.Suwardi, professor Mr.Darmawan and Yasuda. There are so much wide tea and coffee fields, and the landscape is very very beautiful...!

I heard that Indonesian tea plantation fields have so great and beautiful landscape, so I would like to go somewhere. Today, this wish comes true! Thanks for Mr.Suwardi's invitation. Terima kasih banyak...!

Moreover, we went to coffee plantation fields. The field grows "Arabica coffee". This species is the most famous coffee donates about 60% of coffee production. It has good smell like sweet flower and suitable mountainous area, but it is so week for drying and insect pest. So growing Arabica coffee is difficult.
Well, I become want to drink delicious coffee...

That's all. Thank you for reading

Small attempt

Our analysis will finish soon. Now the last one is going on. It is hard for me to do the experiment in new environment.

By the way, I made small attempt.

In Bogor, we can see "Alfa midi/mart" anywhere. They are the popular  convenience store here and the members of Ponta group.

Then, I tryed to use Japanese Ponta at Alfa mart to know whether I can use it.
I asked the staff but,

I couldn't use it. We need to make Indonesian Ponta to get points.

I could find an answer of my question in this attempt. I want to keep trying to solve what I have a question of.

Diary of staying at IPB

Hello, my name is Sota Nishi, Hokkaido University student. This is the first time blogging.
I participated PARE program and arrived at IPB at February 14th. Now, I stay at IPB for 8 days with good health and safety.

This is the first time to go abroad, but I can feel relieved and enjoy this stay thank to the help of Indonesian friends, my senior student and friend came together. I would like to say thank you so much for them.

The day before yesterday, we went to soil sampling in the teaching farm of IPB, palm field, teak forest and cassava field. We are taught the methods of soil sampling by Dr.Suwardi and took some soil samples for chemical analysis. These soils are be drying in the air-drying room. We will start soil analysis from tomorrow afternoon.
soil sampling and soil cross section

There are many tropical plants in the teaching farm of IPB. We were surprised and interesting in these plants that first time we saw them. Look at the palm cross section picture. White one in the center of palm fruit is seed and orange one around the seed is fruit. Usually, palm oil is squeezed from fruit (orange one). Palm has the best oil extraction efficiency about 3000 kg oil / 1 ha. This corresponds to 5~10 times that of soybeans and sunflower. I felt amazing this fact.

In addition, we visited Botanical Garden in Bogor "Kebun Raya Bogor". It was nice weather to walk, not so hot and not rainy day. There are not only tropical plants but also some exibition of Indonesian animals. I was interested in these plants and exibition.

So really really to be lucky, we met Indonesia President Mr.Joko Widodo!! (Leave a note to publish photos) when we walk in KRB. We were very honored. God Bless for President...

Thank you for your attention.
See you next time.

Life in IPB on February

I'm Kaho Yasuda. I come from Hokkaido university to IPB. This is 5th day in IPB. Climate in tropics is too hard for me, but I still keep my health.
Here, in IPB, almost all things are different and surprising. I will show some of them.

(1) Food
I tryed some of Indonesian food. I feel Indonesian food is sweet or spicy. They don't have the middle taste. And they use much oil.
I like spicy foods but sadly, my stomach doesn't accept their oil.... I have to adjust my stomach to Indonesian food.
I also tryed Indonesian "Japanese food," so I'll show it below. The drink showed in photo is called "Teh-Manis." Teh means Tea and Manis does Sweet. This is one of  common drinks in Indonesia.

(2) Traffic
Students of IPB use motorcycle for moving around. So we can see many ones at Campus and traffic around IPB is heavy.

(3) People
Indonesian students are very powerful and talk frankly. I cannot imagine that in case of Japanese students.
My supervisor in IPB introduced us his students and they take care of us kindly. It helps me practically and mentally. In this stay, I will encounter more students and others. I would like to take the chances as precious ones.

Tommorow, we will go to sampling. We can start our experiment next week. I'm looking forward that.

Hokkudai no Marine Natural Product Laboratory

It's me again, Fiti ^-^. As I told earlier in my first post Autumn and Hokkaido University, I am now join Okino Sensei laboratory to finish my thesis research. Thankfully, here they have all lab stuff and machine to support marine natural product chemistry. I find it helpful, because there in Indonesia, we have to send our sample somewhere outside campus to have it characterized (LC-MS; HPLC; NMR) and we also have to pay for it. But here its all free, moreover we can use it again and again.

Actually we have some laboratory rooms, but here I will share some photos only from our main laboratory:

washing side
solvent storage
drying machine
solvent waste

HPLC
H-NMR and C-NMR
LC-MS
As I know, many advanced-measurement equipment in Environmental Earth Science (EES) Faculty are set up and available to use in EVERY laboratory. Since every lab here is belongs to 1 Sensei, soo you can do calculation how many machine are exist here, and its only in EES Faculty..  *.* (consider also for other faculty *.* )

The one that I just realize here is our lab's floor material. It was made from kind of rubber material and was fitted on purpose. So if you dropped your glassware stuff, it will not be broken easily. This is very good for me, since I often drop and break my glassware stuff there in Indonesia..kekekke :p

Floor material was made from kind of rubber

Thanks for stopping by and see you in the next post ^~^

Autumn and Hokkaido University

My First Live Autumn Experience

First post :D

Hello everyone my name is Fitria Susilowati, UGM Master course student. Now in Japan they call me Fiti. Yep, you can also call me Fiti :) Anyway, nice to meet you. I am so grateful to be one of PARE member and visiting Hokkaido University for these 5 months. Last March I joined PARE Spring School 2015. It was held in IPB. Well, that was joyful and tearful 2 weeks, yet it was all memorable for me :D

2015 PARE Spring School IPB Indonesia
I decided to join PARE certificate Program for June admission since I found Okino Sensei Laboratory has the same field of interest with my research. Thankfully, I got a very warm welcome from Sensei. And..here I am now in Hokkaido University. This is my first time visiting Japan.

Meet up again with our spring school friends here in Hokkaido (as we promise)

Actually 5 days ago -marks a month countdown till we flight down to Hokkaido. Yep, it’s been a month and guess what?? This is my first experience to have autumn season ^~^

Hokkaido University has it’s own beautiful scenery in autumn. Trees with various colors which I always wish to see. Well, this is my first experience to see so-called autumn-trees.

Ginkgo Avenue

Enjoying trees dressing up in red and yellow beautiful autumn leaves

On October 24 and 25, there was an event named "Golden Leaves Festival" in Ginkgo avenue. The yellow leaves of Ginkgo was lit up at night. It snowed on that day (the temperature seems to drop quite quickly in Hokkaido) but I still could enjoy the beauty of the autumn leaves ^~^

Golden Leaves Festival

I am fully grateful to see these spectacular scenery and colors right before my eyes. Thanks PARE. Thanks Hokkaido University.

Me, hijab, and autumn

Thanks for stopping by and see you in the next post ^~^
