Hello everyone~~ 😆 This is Satoka, a student of PARE spring school 2016.
We hokudai students just came back from Thailand last Wednesday, I still can't stand this low temperature in Sapporo, even I am a Dosanko !(Dosanko is who borned and grow in Hokkaido)
From March 6th ~ 22th, it was amazing time ....
First week, we had many lectures and discussion and presentation at Kasetsart University . It was great experience to share the ideas and present in front of other groups, I was inspired a lot from other student's way of thinking.
Next week, we went to field trip along Mae Klong river to do water sampling, also we visited some place like; dams, irrigation center, rice center, SIIT.... Everyday was full of activities, that's why I could sleep well every night.
Thai food is very delicious. especially I like Thai custard with fried something !
Not only from lectures but also through field work, communication with other students, I learned a lot about the water management situation/solution in Thailand.
I am very very happy to be able to attend this program as my very first time to study abroad with international students. Every students is smart, funny, crazy, kind and friendly.
Thank you for teaching me a lot of cultures, languages....
Hope to meet you again in the future.
I love pare students💖

Stay in Jambi - Part 1. Research
Hello, PARE friends. Today, I post my
situation in Jambi, Sumatra Island.
In order to conduct my research, I left
Bogor in west of Java Island. Now, I have stayed in Jambi for one month and I
will stay there until the end of January. Jambi is south east province in Sumatra
Island and especially the place I stay is located in coastal area. In November,
there were worried by haze problem(thick smoke) due to peat fire during dry
season but the rainy season has started and the haze disappeared.

My research focuses on the greenhouse gas
emission from the acid sulfate soil. I take gas and soil samples in order to
measure gas emission and controlling factor of the emission in the agricultural
field in Jambi. Because the place I stay is coastal area, there has a lot of
acid sulfate soil affected sea water. Once the soil got drained, sulfide in the
soil got oxidized and produce much amount of sulfate ion (SO42-)
then decrease its pH.

Even though working in the hot agricultural
field exhausts me and the live in this place has difference from city area, I will
work hard and contribute to this place through suggesting less environmental
damage agriculture. See you again.

My story in Japan: Part 1
In April, I join landscape lecture with bachelor and master course students. We went Botanic Garden for learn plant characteristic and species of each family. Botanic Garden in Sapporo, are historic botanical gardens laid out at the beginning of the city's development in the early years of the Meiji Period in 1886. Around 13.3 hectare site contains over 4,000 plants native to Hokkaido and a museum. We can be enjoyed in spring, summer and autumn. Botanic Garden are the second oldest botanical gardens in Japan after Koishikawa Botanical Garden in Tokyo. The gardens are proudly owned and operated by Hokkaido University. I like this place very much because it look like forest and have many plants different tropical.
BOTANIC GARDEN
MUSEUM
The museum was built in 1882, known as the Natural History Museum including close to the entrance, dedicated to the lifestyle and culture of the indigenous peoples of Hokkaido ( the Ainu and Uilta) with exhibits collected from the period 1870-1930.
I want to shown some plant in Botanic Garden for this blog, thus

What a fantastic program, PARE 2014: The fact form International Forum
Last week Dec 9th, 2014 I and some PARE students (Charisa,
Yeni, and Vannesa) joined a great seminar. International Forum aiming at
Foundation of a New Graduate School of Global Food Resources: Perspectives of
Contribution to Facing Crisis on Food, Water and Land Resources via Transdiciplinary
Human Resources. It was because we selected the same lecture and this seminar
was part of our lecture. This seminar was an international forum that prepared
for the “birth” of new major in Hokkaido University (A New Graduate School of
Global Food Resources) on April 2017. In this seminar, we are tried to “shape”
the new concept of an emerging graduated student characteristics as the goal of
the new graduated school.

The committee had invited 5 speakers. They are Dr. Masa Iwanaga from Japan
International Research Center of agriculture Science (JIRCAS), Mr. Hiroshi Nagano
from Global Service Forum-Organization for Economic Co-operation and
Development (OECD), Dr.Sharon P.Shoemaker from Universitu of California-Davis
USA, Dr. Gretchen Kalonji from United Nations Educational Science and Cultural Organization
(UNESCO) and also from Embassy of France in Japan.
The speaker told her/his experience about world condition
and its relationship with our position (graduated student). Dr. Mas Iwanaga
told that today was very different from the “ancient” age. In past, we have green
revolution to fulfill our food needed. But, it is not compatible anymore. From
green we have to move to the “rainbow revolution”. Although green revolution
gave good effect in maintaining food stock, but it also brought bad effect.
Green revolution made population increase, income increase, but in addition it
also reduces environmental quality, global warming issue, triple burden of food
problems (hunger, malnutrition, obesity). Now, we are facing the global challenges:
1. Increase productivity, 2. Natural resources base protectsà sustainability, 3. Climate
change, 4. Globalization and emerging world. Those challenges were a big “homework” for all
of people in the world, especially the “promising great generation”, Yes, that’s
we are!

What did we learn in PARE program was very enchanting trough
this seminar (or this seminar them has been enchanted to PARE). I do feel very grateful
to join PARE programs, because I feel fortune, I know this issue early and we
already learnt about it.
From Mr Hiroshi Nagano, we were been encourage to learn from
oversea! Go to study aboard and feel “the energy” there. It was important to
get involved in diversity culture as early as possible. He also suggests to
learn English very well as early as possible. Those two points that I marked
was very pointed to PARE program too. Wow, what a great of PARE program that
already answered all of the challenges.
The seminar was joined by many great people. Almost the
entire professor in Graduate School of
agriculture came to the seminar, include
Hatano sensei. I’ve learn from this seminar that we have to really think global, although we will
only work “local”. We have to work together to save the world. It sounds that PARE
student will be the HERO. ^_^
But, I do hope so. All of us will be the HERO not only to ourselves,
family, university but also our nations.
