Hello everyone. My name is Pandu, i'm from Indonesia. Going to Japan is one of my dreams in the past. I have to thank God because now my dream has come true. Now I'm in Sapporo, Japan! There are many stories that you have to know about Sapporo. One is the cultural differences are very contrast with Indonesia. I’ll be detailing some of the aspects of life here in Japan that are contributing to my culture shock in an attempt to help others prepare for their future lives in Japan.

I said ‘My English is very poor, please help me’ for self-introduction on the first day. Before I participated in PARE Summer School 2014, I was very uneasy because I have never discuss or make a presentation in English and talked with foreign people. But in the opening ceremony, five members of our group 4 talked to me friendly, so I felt to relax a little.
After various lectures and field works in Sapporo, Tomakomai and Toya etc., we thought about a possibility to convert the excrement of human into energy by referring to the biogas plant in Machimura farm we visited on 1 September to propose the positive PARE chain. Then we discuss a master plan mainly focused on the biogas plant with organic orchard using mango and mangosteen trees. In Onuma we repeated a discussion for midterm presentation until midnight every day.
Midterm presentation was over without any accidents. Then we separated into each special field and I learned about the biofarming system for aquaculture in Hakodate. It was a very eco-friendly system that pumps up water for culture using electricity produced by small wind turbine or sollar panel. I introduced this experience in Hakodate to my group members after I was back to Sapporo, but regrettably the idea of aquaculture was not adopted in our master plan because our focus was on biogas plant. Instead, I came to present the introduction, so I investigated the population in the world, in Asia and the amount of excrement of human per a day. We made a heated discussion all day long in the day before final presentation. I sometimes could not follow their English, but everyone found I was confused spoke to me slowly and briefly.
Finally we started final presentation from my introduction, and we were able to do our best presentation. During two weeks, I talked with my group members about many topics, not only serious subject for presentation but also trivial subject such as favorite food, songs and boyfriend/girlfriend and we also sing a song together. I really enjoyed all time with them. I was able to spend best two weeks because everyone really helped me. They are my best friends.
Now in my laboratory, I research on impression evaluation of the coastal landscape with or without wind farm. I was able to learn about various renewable energy including wind power through this summer school, and it broadened my horizons. There are many advantages on wind power, geothermal power and hydropower while there are some disadvantages such as initial cost or establishment space. It is very interesting for me to know about many things on renewable energy. I probably will be able to make use of this good experience in my research.
This summer school for two weeks is my lifetime treasure.

You will write a report (500 words) on your group’s discussion.
In the report, you will:
A.
Propose how you can
contribute as a specialist to realize your group’s master plan, and
B.
Propose a title of research
paper related to the master plan.
The principle of sustainability is consists of
three main aspects, they are economics, social, and environments. Sustainable
solution is something that encompass viewpoint of economist, sociologist, and
ecologist. Our world today faced great problem that mainly caused by a chain
called negative PARE chain. As population increases (P), activities will also
increase (A), because of that resources depleted (R), and finally the
environment is degraded (D). In order to seek the solution of the problem,
our group focused on integration of the effective use of fossil fuel,
alternative energy development, land use planning, environmental monitoring,
and sustainability education for the society. As presented before, we believe
that we should integrate those aspects to reach sustainability in a country.
Our case study is Indonesia.
As a specialist of environmental engineering
management, I could contribute to the environmental monitoring and society
education aspect. Environmental monitoring is necessary to be established for
every other sectors, they are including ambient air monitoring, emission of
air pollutants, waste water effluent, water quality, and land use usage. This
environmental monitoring is best when established nationally, so we need a
national environmental monitoring network. There are many technologies and
guidance available for environmental monitoring that ready to be applied. The
problem in Indonesia is the human resources, we have monitoring stations already
in big cities, but the regular operation is still far from good. It is
because the government and public are not yet aware about the importance of
knowing the country’s environment state, therefore experts that supervised monitoring
activities also very few. I can be the supervising expert who focused on
establishing Indonesia’s environmental monitoring network. But I realized
that, the government and public support are very important yet not easy to
obtain. First, we need to create a team of researchers from different
background but belongs to some academic institiution. Then, after creating
the team, we can propose the national environmental monitoring network
establishment plant to the Ministry of Environment of Indonesia.
Besides, we still need to increase public
awareness. The public won’t know the environmental monitoring network is
important, if we don’t educate them. Therefore, society education is
necessary. During PARE Program, we introduced to a creative environmental
education place, named Hakkenzan EcoCatering. I think it’s best to educate
society using creative approach, like creating Eco – Energy Park in the city.
The Eco – Energy park shall be self sufficient in energy, using solar panels
as energy sources. Beside, to educate people, this Eco – Energy park also
shall exhibit prototypes of energy plants (windmill, wind turbine, microhydro)
and other interactive education media. The Eco – Energy park project is most likely
started in the city of Bandung. City of Bandung has many park that are about
to be renovated by the new mayor, Mr. Ridwan Kamil. He is very open to public
ideas for renovation of the park, so that I can propose to create an Eco – Energy
park as one of Bandung’s theme park.
Related to the masterplan, I would like to propose
a research with the title “A Contingent Valuation Study for Bandung Eco-Energy
Park: Evaluation of Willingness to Pay” to create environmental economics
valuation of the plan.

Waste and Biomass as Future Energy Resources
For the biomass, we will use agriculture by product
as biomass that can be converted to bioethanol by using microorganism like
yeast. In bioethanol production, one importance part to apply that plan is
the technology to convert biomass to bioethanol. The problem with this
technology is in the pre-treatment of lignocellulose to remove the lignin and
get hemicellulose and cellulose (delignification process). Usually, this
process need to be done by acid or alkali treatment which can give
environmental problem. The alternative way is using microorganism like fungi
or bacteria to do that job. However, the microbe is need longtime to finish
that job and this is causing expensive cost production of bioethanol. So we
need to screen many microbe that can do delignification process quickly.
So, I am as biochemist, I can contribute to do
research in order to search microbe that have high capability to do
delignification. In addition, I also can contribute to increasing the technic
to convert biomass to bioethanol. Increasing the number of bioethanol that
produced by microbe etc. All of this kind of research can be done by
biochemistry and biotechnology research. In order to achieve our master plan,
I will purpose a research title: “Screening
endogenous microbe from vary agriculture by product with high delignification
capability”.
Lignocellulose in nature, usually destroy by endophyte
microbe. Each sources of lignocellulose will have different type of microbe
that responsible to destroy that lignocellulose. Each strain of microbe even
if fungi or bacteria, they have different capability to do delignification
lignocellulose. So, to get good microbe, we should search many entophyte
microbe from many kind of plants. Indonesia has mega biodiversity of plants,
it will give high opportunity also to get many kind of microbes. By evaluate
the capability each microbe in each lignocellulose sources, we can
investigate further on the microbe mechanism to do delignification and also
investigate enzyme that is responsible for this process. If all of this
information we can achieve, we can construct microbe that have very high
capability to do delignification with genetic engineering.
