Recent report and fieldtrip

Hello.
About a week ago, we finished our all experiments, calculated the results and discussed with helper laboratorians and professor Mr.Suwardi. There are less strange data, so I was relieved a little...

By the way, today, I went to "Pangalaengan" which situates at south of Bandun, central west Java, mountainous area. I went there with professor Mr.Suwardi, professor Mr.Darmawan and Yasuda. There are so much wide tea and coffee fields, and the landscape is very very beautiful...!

I heard that Indonesian tea plantation fields have so great and beautiful landscape, so I would like to go somewhere. Today, this wish comes true! Thanks for Mr.Suwardi's invitation. Terima kasih banyak...!

Moreover, we went to coffee plantation fields. The field grows "Arabica coffee". This species is the most famous coffee donates about 60% of coffee production. It has good smell like sweet flower and suitable mountainous area, but it is so week for drying and insect pest. So growing Arabica coffee is difficult.
Well, I become want to drink delicious coffee...

That's all. Thank you for reading

Small attempt

Our analysis will finish soon. Now the last one is going on. It is hard for me to do the experiment in new environment.

By the way, I made small attempt.

In Bogor, we can see "Alfa midi/mart" anywhere. They are the popular  convenience store here and the members of Ponta group.

Then, I tryed to use Japanese Ponta at Alfa mart to know whether I can use it.
I asked the staff but,

I couldn't use it. We need to make Indonesian Ponta to get points.

I could find an answer of my question in this attempt. I want to keep trying to solve what I have a question of.

Diary of staying at IPB

Hello, my name is Sota Nishi, Hokkaido University student. This is the first time blogging.
I participated PARE program and arrived at IPB at February 14th. Now, I stay at IPB for 8 days with good health and safety.

This is the first time to go abroad, but I can feel relieved and enjoy this stay thank to the help of Indonesian friends, my senior student and friend came together. I would like to say thank you so much for them.

The day before yesterday, we went to soil sampling in the teaching farm of IPB, palm field, teak forest and cassava field. We are taught the methods of soil sampling by Dr.Suwardi and took some soil samples for chemical analysis. These soils are be drying in the air-drying room. We will start soil analysis from tomorrow afternoon.

There are many tropical plants in the teaching farm of IPB. We were surprised and interesting in these plants that first time we saw them. Look at the palm cross section picture. White one in the center of palm fruit is seed and orange one around the seed is fruit. Usually, palm oil is squeezed from fruit (orange one). Palm has the best oil extraction efficiency about 3000 kg oil / 1 ha. This corresponds to 5~10 times that of soybeans and sunflower. I felt amazing this fact.

In addition, we visited Botanical Garden in Bogor "Kebun Raya Bogor". It was nice weather to walk, not so hot and not rainy day. There are not only tropical plants but also some exibition of Indonesian animals. I was interested in these plants and exibition.

So really really to be lucky, we met Indonesia President Mr.Joko Widodo!! (Leave a note to publish photos) when we walk in KRB. We were very honored. God Bless for President...

Thank you for your attention.
See you next time.

Life in IPB on February

I'm Kaho Yasuda. I come from Hokkaido university to IPB. This is 5th day in IPB. Climate in tropics is too hard for me, but I still keep my health.
Here, in IPB, almost all things are different and surprising. I will show some of them.

(1) Food
I tryed some of Indonesian food. I feel Indonesian food is sweet or spicy. They don't have the middle taste. And they use much oil.
I like spicy foods but sadly, my stomach doesn't accept their oil.... I have to adjust my stomach to Indonesian food.
I also tryed Indonesian "Japanese food," so I'll show it below. The drink showed in photo is called "Teh-Manis." Teh means Tea and Manis does Sweet. This is one of  common drinks in Indonesia.

(2) Traffic
Students of IPB use motorcycle for moving around. So we can see many ones at Campus and traffic around IPB is heavy.

(3) People
Indonesian students are very powerful and talk frankly. I cannot imagine that in case of Japanese students.
My supervisor in IPB introduced us his students and they take care of us kindly. It helps me practically and mentally. In this stay, I will encounter more students and others. I would like to take the chances as precious ones.

Tommorow, we will go to sampling. We can start our experiment next week. I'm looking forward that.

Looking back this month

Hello, everyone. This is Haruka in IPB, from Hokkaido University. It’s already the end of November.. Time passes so quickly, ya..
Here, I would like to look back activities in this month.

Regarding research, I started data collection from the end of October. My research is about child health and parental practices. I interviewed mothers (sometimes fathers) in villages about their practice of feeding children, health service utilization, and so on. I also interviewed village leaders, kader (volunteer women who work in health center) and midwives.

My friends helped me a lot..

We had some difficulty in research, for instance, making appointments. Some respondents are so busy to make appointments. Moreover, due to “jam karet (flexible time)”, we had to postpone interview many times. Through research activities, I got toughness and became more patient!

Besides research, I visit some places around Bogor.

My senior student and her family took me to park (I forgot the name..).
The park had many kinds of animal.

My friend’s supervisor in soil science invited me to Jasinga.
Very huge oil palm plantation..

Visited Taman Mini with friends..

We enjoyed traditional housing and clothes.

And I gave a presentation to undergraduate students on Japanese parenting.
There were many students in the class.. This was the first time for me to give a lecture, but I really enjoyed it! I could communicate with many undergraduate students.

I have only one month left to stay here. I’ve not been to distant places from Bogor yet.. Before I leave, I MUST go somewhere!

Thank you for reading all! See you again!

Nice to meet you from IPB

Hello everyone. My name is Haruka Okumura. I’m a graduate school student at Hokkaido University. Now, I am at IPB in Indonesia.

Three weeks have passed since I arrived in Indonesia. This is the first time for me to come to Indonesia. I will stay here for 3 months from October to December.

Since I arrived here, I’ve been surprised at many points, hot weather, crowded people, many cars and motorcycles and so on. However, I am really enjoying my stay in Bogor! My supervisors and new friends are very kind. And this is an important point, every food tastes good (in Bahasa Indonesia, enak)!
Sate kambing
This is Sate, like “Yakitori” in Japan.

I stay at international dormitory in campus. I’m so lucky because the dormitory is very close to campus :). The dormitory is clean and comfortable for me.

On 10th October, I was invited to a marriage ceremony at IPB International Convention Center in Botani. I wore the traditional clothing kebaya.

I had never seen such a gorgeous ceremony before. I heard later that the number of guests was beyond 2000 (so many..). I was happy to see the beautiful bride and gloom. I also enjoyed traditional dance and foods.

The main purpose of my stay is research about child development and parental skills. I attended some parental meeting and discussion.

I am planning to start my research in villages in this week. I’m looking forward to visiting villages. I would like to talk about my research next time.

Thank you for reading all. See you again!

Tackling your Communication Challenges

Have you ever come to a country without its language skill? What will you do to “survive”? How do you communicate with others? Language is undeniably important tool when you are living in a place where the culture and language are dissimilar to your homeland. For “outlanders”, like me, Japanese language skill is totally necessary.
It happened to me when arriving in Hokkaido, Japan, in the end of March 2015. Without Japanese language skill, living in Hokkaido for around six months offers me a significant challenge. Mostly information in public facilities is written in Japanese language using Katakana, Hiragana, and Kanji characters. Only few things are informed in Romaji characters (alphabet). For instance, when you come to a minimarket, most products are described in Japanese characters (Figure 1). Additionally, it is not easy to practice English, because almost people or workers who work in public facilities (e.g. city office, bank and minimarket) did not speak English. Even though you are excellent in English, sometimes it is unhelpful. Japan is not English-speaking country. Briefly, communication is upmost problem.

Fortunately, International Student Centre (ISC), Hokkaido University, has provided Japanese class to facilitate international students studying Japanese language. The enrollment was completed prior to my attendance in Japan, thus I can join the class directly. I start learning Japanese in grammar level 1, a very basic level. Three meetings a week, shukudai (home work), quiz and practice in each meeting remarkably boost my language skill, specifically in mastering hiragana and katakana. In the beginning, I was less confidence that I can remember all hiragana and katakana characters. It seemed so complicated. However, consistency helps me a lot to conquer them. Moreover, some tools are helpful such as “minna no nihon go” grammar books (みんなの日本語) (Figure 2). Consequently, it is much easier to understand Japanese vocabulary written in hiragana and katakana, and I can easily write my name using katakana (this is my name in katakana: モジオノ).

Figure 2 Grammar books “minna no nihon go”
The class is designed to create a great atmosphere for studying. The lessons are conveyed and presented by teacher using easy-to-understand and step-by-step method. Although we have a very enjoyable class, the evaluation and examination are strictly considered, suggesting that students have to study hard to tackle Japanese class challenges. Additionally, the class period is almost over, and I have to prepare for summer quarters class period in higher level.
Moreover, joining Japanese class not only provides language enhancement, but also offers a wider chance to interact with new friends who come from various countries and diverse continents. The diversity is present in my class, such as Australia, Philippine, Vietnam, Czech, Indonesia, Nepal, Egypt, Mozambique, South Korea, Pakistan, and China.
In conclusion, communication is a serious barrier for everyone, especially students, who comes to Japan, including in Hokkaido University, with poor Japanese language skill. Yet, the facility has been arranged by campus management to deal with student language problem.
