Hokkaido Story: Travelling in the past and being settled now

Last week, exactly September 25, 2014 I and also all of long term PARE programs students move to our dormitory. For the girls, we are all in International House Kita 23 and for the boys are in International House Kita 8 East. So, this is my “home” now in Sapporo-Hokkaido.

My Dormitory
A month ago, August 24, 2014 we came in Japan. In the first 2-week, we spent our time in many places in Hokkaido. We stayed at Sapporo House YH in Kita 8 for a week, and then we moved to Greenpia Onuma in Mori Machi (Mori City), and the last we stay at Classe Stay Sapporo Station in 8-1 Kita 10 Nishi 1 Kita-ku Sapporo. In addition, because I was in agricultural subject, I also spent 4 days in livestock farm of Hokkaido University, in Shizunai, Hidaka sub prefecture.

The "travelling map"-adapted from PARE program presentation ^_^

In the Summer Pare Program, 2 weeks are become like a traveling time every day. In 2 weeks, I lived in 4 places! But, I do enjoy it. In the first week when we were in Sapporo House YH, we also visited Tomakomai city (Tomakomai Oil Storage, Tomakomai City Government, Tomatoh-atsuma thermal power station & solar plant), Sapporo City (Maruyama Zoo), Ishikari City (Ishikari LNG terminal and community wind power), Ebetsu City (Machimura Farm). In the 2nd week, we visited Toyako Cho (JA Toyako- snow storage, Abuta power plant-hydro power plant), Mori Machi (Mori power plant-geothermal power plant, and greenhouse-geothermal heating system), and Hakodate City (Hakodate Research Center for Fisheries and Oceans and Hakodate Beach). What a wonderful journey for travelling around Hokkaido! I do really miss you all guys,, need time machine (Boong said ^_^).

My big suitcases

In that time, bringing suitcase and packaging are becoming a habit. We just had simple dress, simple food (just buy food in the convenient store), and simple sleep (in shared bed or futon). Everything is simple and easy. But now, I am finally settled in Hokudai International House Kita 23 (You can find more information in International House Kita 23. Hokudai International House Kita 23 is located in Kita 23-jo Nishi 13-chome Kita-ku. It is very far from my Agriculture campus in Kita-9 Nishi-9 Kita-ku, about 18 blocks.

I stay at Building 2 (the newest building-construction in 2010) in room number 609 (6th floor). The security level of this building is very high. Finger print is the “key” for entering the building and also the room. We have to put our finger in finger detection machine to enter the building. And for the rooms, each floor consists of 8 rooms that divided into 2 wings. Each wing has the “wing” door (I don’t know the name, so just call it as wing door) that also need finger print for opening. Only finger print from person who lived there that can open the “wing” door. And we have our room key. So, just like I can enter the building, enter my “wing”, enter my room, but I can’t enter other wings and rooms. They also have CCTV camera in elevator and many places. It is very strict. This dormitory provides us many good facilities. In each wing we have common room (include TV), kitchen, laundry (2 machines), toilet (3), shower (2), and shoe box. In our room we have bed, desk, chair, bookshelf, refrigerator (it is big), private sink, electric heating, curtains, phone and optical fiber Internet. So, we can have the internet connection easily (it is become main needed now). For the phone we can use it to call other student phone, so just in the building. Other facilities are bike parking area and mailbox. And because this building is just 4 years old, so everything is just like new!

The building and security system

Facilities : kitchen, coomon room, mailbox, bike parking area

The room ^_^

My room is in the 6th floor. Every room is facing to East or West, so we can see sunrise or sunset. My room is facing to West. In the evening I can see the sunset beautifully. This is one of the most exited things about my dormitory.

Sunrise in cloudy (from common room side)

Sunrise in clear (from common room side)

Sunset in cloudy (from my room ^_^)

So,,,
This is my first "Hokkaido Story"..
Let we see for the next story in 5 months,, ^_^

Self-Introduction and Summer School Experiences

Hello…

My name is Ria, a short version of Ratna Patriana. I’m a master student of Rural Sociology, Bogor Agricultural University, Indonesia. I join with PARE Program since this year, from Introduction to PARE, Summer School and Long Semester. All of these programs so far have given me so many lessons, fruitful experiences and, of course, good friends. The last that I mentioned was so exceptional, especially after we joined the summer school. Tight schedule, difficult tasks, happy and sad moments that we shared together have bounded our friendship, regardless the language barrier and duration of the program.

We came from different background, which most of the students were from natural sciences background. Mine is social science which, I guess, was the one and only in this program. At first I felt afraid that I can’t follow the lectures, but with the helps from other students, I can understand the materials. The knowledge that I gained from this program was relatively new for me, and thankfully each student come from different disciplines, so that we can share our knowledge and mix it together to build an interconnected idea.

The last summer school program was – how can I say? – incredible! During that short period of time, we have visited so many places, from Tomakomai, Ishikari, Ebetsu, Toyako, Mori town, Maruyama zoo until Hakodate. We learnt so many things, from oil storage, biogas, wind power, hydro power, geothermal power and many other sustainable energy initiatives. At the end of the program, we were challenged to build a master plan about sustainable energy development to overcome the problem in Population, Activities, Resource and Environment – PARE Chain – in Asia.

Mahatma Gandhi once said, “Freedom is not worth having if it doesn’t include the freedom to make mistakes.” And because of Freedom is the power of the youth, Freedom also the power of us too. Even though in the beginning, making a master plan in a very limited time sounded impossible, with the power of freedom and without worrying of making mistakes, all of us eventually finished our group master plan and presented it in an awesome/sugoi/sud-yord/keren-banget way. That was, for me, the biggest challenge that we had to face in this summer school. And honestly, the idea that came up from each master plan was extra ordinary. I’m very proud that I can be the part of this program.

That was my (not very) short introduction and experiences in PARE Summer School 2014. And now I miss my summer school friends!

-Self Introduction-

Hallo everyone,,.,. Konichiwa minna san,.

I am Laura Flowrensia, please call me 'Rara". I am master student of Silviculture, faculty of Forestry, Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), Indonesia. Thankfully, I am a member of PARE Program 2014, and now I am study at Entomology Sytematics Laboratory, faculty of Agriculture, under guidance of Shinichi Akimoto sensei. And I can't wait to start my laboratory works. Hahahahaha,.

It is already a month that I have been in Hokkaido,.,but it feel like it is Yesterday that I had finished "Summer School PARE Program" complete with the interested-hectic schedules. I can not remember- to forget all the Summer School activities. I still clearly remember Kobayashi sensei lecturer about animal productions, and pesticides and food additives by Hashidoko sensei on the first day of Summer School class at Office of International Affairs (OIA).

Group discussion, paper reports and group debate suddenly became something I miss,.#eeeh Hahahahaha (LOL). This page can not never enough to provide my experiences as part of PARE Family, such as : class discussions, field works, preparation for presentation, and especially the stories behind the presentation itself. It is unbelieveable everyone succeed to perform smoothly with those limit preparation time. PARE Program is some kind of beyond out of doubt.

I believe everyone have a good remembrances in this PARE Program. Eventhough english not the mother language anyone of us, we keep trying our best to sound our ideas. I am a hundread percent impressed by tenacity of my PARE friends. Miss you PARE friends,.,especially the Summer School ones, and of course,. Hokudate group. 555555555 (LOL).

Big Dreams of Smart City and Eco-Friendly Habit (a final report from Yunita)

Yunita Siti Mardhiyyah (PARE26-002)
Bogor Agricultural University
Group No. 2

My group presented master plan about smart city concept that can be developed in developing country, such as Indonesia or Thailand and education game. The concept of smart city actually was based on the observation and our experiment in PARE Summer School program. The smart city should have a good transportation system, such as port, train and good road. Separation between industry area, housing, central city, rural area (include agriculture, aquaculture and livestock area) should be done to make a good mobility system. Energy support also becomes the most important thing to fulfill the human needed. Smart house and building that use solar panel can be one of the solutions. The oil storage (like in Tomakomai city), hydro power plant, and wind mill power plant can be developed too.
Smart City Master Plan

As the food scientist, I can take a part in the food supply system and also development in food industry. Primary food should be the priority to be distributed to all of citizen. Good transportation between rural area (rice, vegetable, fruit and meat producer) and the city (especially to the market) should be developed well to ensure the food supply chain.
Development of food industry based on local resources is also important. Sumatra island is rich of natural resources, such as coffee, palm, sugar cane, banana, pineapple, shrimp, etc. Food processing product (instant coffee, sugar and candy, canned fruit, palm oil, etc.) can be developed. This sector will provide job for citizen and can increase the citizen income. The product also can be a specific product that figured the area (such as Sumatra). A good research about food product that establish from natural resources should be establish.
Related to the master plan, food scientist can have the research about functional food product from local resources. Such as development of Sumatra origin coffee flavor. This research can be separated to be many parts. Starting from evaluation of Sumatra’s coffee flavor, identification and quantification of its aroma active compounds, and finally application of aroma in products. Extraction of aroma compound using different method is important step. Different polarity of absorbent in Solid Phase Micro Extraction (SPME) can absorb different aroma molecules. To obtain whole information about aroma profile of coffee, we can use at least 2 different absorbent (polar and non-polar absorbents). Then, identification of aromas can be done by MS analysis. The last step is omission test. In this test, we can obtain the most important compound (aroma active compounds) that representative of Sumatra coffee flavor. These compounds then can be used as flavoring in many products, such as bread, drink, candy, etc. Knowledge about local wisdom (food) should be documented well to protect national culture, and research could be the solution for it.
From PARE, especially Summer School program, I learnt that there should be a dynamic, balancing and cooperation between human needed (include food, industry, and energy) and the environment. Human activities (such as food industry) that have the goal for improving human life quality (smart city concept) must have the environmental consideration. Education for human is a key for successful country development. How we use technology and energy wisely to improve our life quality and at the same time maintain our environment is the issue. The short message about eco-friendly living can be taught firstly to the children (our proposed master plan).
Education Game for Eco-Friendly Habit

So, let’s have a good life quality and peaceful environment by eco-friendly habit and big dreams.
Big hug from Sapporo and do really miss you all guys..
