Wonderful Kyoto

Hello.


In the last minute of my life in Japan, I decided to do spring vacation after finishing all classes and tasks. One of the place that I've visited is Kyoto. Many people recommend this city to be visited. and yes! I love it already. Kyoto was gorgeous. There are a lot of temples and historical sites. Also, this is heaven for matcha lovers. Plenty of beautiful words may describe this place somehow. However, you should experience it by yourself and you’ll not regret. Trust me :)

Jojo’s Diary : February Part 2_New Mission

こんにちは

            Now, Haruyasumi was started. I have already finished  all of classes, Japanese exam and reports. (Yeah! I pass the exam) Everyday, I have only experiment to do. Now, I have finished my old experiment about the effect of copper wire in the recovery of plastics and valuable metals from small home appliances by using Jig separation and now, i start to write paper about this and start new experiment about the recovery of valuable metals from fine particle of computer's print circuit boards by using Knelson Concentrator (Centrifugal Gravity Separator) and Hydrocyclone.

Back to the time I was belonged to Hokudai still...
          As always, I'm usually enjoyed eating and going out with my friends but at that time I also enjoyed cooking and brought bento to my laboratory or actually at that time I was too busy to go out anywhere for eat so I have to cook lol.  Anyway my last week was busy with going out with friends and finishing things

I can say that the last months was the toughest one for me since I have to finished my experiment, submitted all reports, prepared presentation and started to packing stuff. OMG! Such a hectic month right? By the way I still have a great time with many people in my grad. school and my friends so it was okieee (I mean not really depressed like that.. you know?)

Currently..I'm back  to Thailand for two weeks already
Everything here still the same before I went to Japan but I am the one who kinda changed a little since I get used to some of Japanese cultures and lifestyle, and especially the weather!! OMG! In Thailand is 35 degree Celsius while Hokkaido only minus 5 degree Celsius. :O

I still miss Hokkaido, food, weather (except snow storm haha), my lab members and sensei, especially all of my friends there.
I am not going to say if I have a chance I will go back there but I will say I will make a chance to go back there again :)

Bogor; 10 Days On!!

Since I left Sapporo ten days ago, life has had a good course for me... a couple of accomplishments that reassure me than soon, I shall be heading back to Kenya, my motherland!

I would like to take this opportunity to express my utmost, sincere gratitides to the PARE central office for facilitating my participation in the PARE program and thereby building my capacity, experience and knowledge in numerous perspectives... I am never the same again!!

For those praparing to attend the Spring School at Bogor Agricultural University, congratulations as you grace such a prestigeous opportunity to learn and build the frontier spirit aimed at making you a problem-solver for the good of humanity at large.

small trip to Jakarta

Hi. This is Kentaro from Bogor, Indonesia.


Last Saturday, I went to Jakarta to visit kota tua(old city) with my friends in laboratory. There are many kinds of museums and historical buildings. We visited the museum of Indonesia bank. And I could learn about it along with Indonesian history.

As for my research, I recently analyse some soil properties and after these I'm going to summarize data and prepare to make final presentation.

In the rest Indonesian stay, I want to keep working hard and enjoying hard also.

And I'm looking forward to join SPRING SCHOOL.

Have fun with snow festival

           Snow festival is one of the large event in Hokkaido. It attracts all the tourists around the world. Airplane ticket, hotel price are increasing because this festival. I have heard about snow festival since I was a child. I have never though that I have a chance to going to snow festival but luckily, I'm become a exchange student of Hokkaido University in snow festival period!
           I went to snow festival with my 2 Thai friends, Tent and Best. We very excited with a large building from the snow. We tried Japanese foods sell in this event. We also went to Tsudome to enjoy large snow slides and a snow rafting area outside the dome. It's very funny. Everything is perfect!






         I would like to Thank you PARE program which give me this chance! This is a great experience. I hope one day I can come to Sapporo and join this festival again :)

Cooking party in Jogja

Yesterday I cooked some international foods with my friends.

















We cooked Nikujaga, Dasi-maki, tempe goreng, ca kangkung and so on.
One of my friend brought korean dish (I forgot the name..)

Do you know "Nikujaga"?
It is famous dish in Japan, made from meat, potatoes and onion stewed in sweetened soy sauce.
It is easy to cook. If you are interested in, please try it!!

The Loved-Hated Week in This Winter

I do loved and hated this winter week more than other. Why?

Yup, last week is the important date for Hokkaido, especially in Sapporo. Starting from 5-11 February 2015, Yuki Matsuri or Snow Festival had been held in Sapporo-Hokkaido.
This event is starting from 1950, and it was developed until the 66th in 2015. On this year, the event held in 3 place, Odori Park, Susukino, and Tsudome. In Odor Park, beside seeing the snow sculpture, there are music concert, skate rink, park air jump (the snowboard and free style ski performance), light show, cross country skiing course, scrumptious food, and international snow sculpture contest. In Susukino site, we can see the ice sculpture and enjoy the hot drink in Ice Bar. For the last site, Tsudome, we can enjoy the winter game and sport, such as sliding. There are 3 sliding sites, they are tube slide, ice slide, and waku-waku slide. We also can play in other sites such as bamboo ski, snowman labyrinth, snowman making, snow rafting, snow zip land, etc. And, “yatta” I got my foot stamp in all 3 sites.

One more experience about winter, it is bout winter sport, ski. Yup! Finally I have this experience. I did country ski with International Citizen Association in Ebetsu. We passed the Napporo Forest Park in the shortest distance about 1 km (maybe just in the outline of the forest). But, we spent about 1 -1.5 hours to finish the track. The first time, I just thought that it will be easy, because we are not skiing from the mountain, but it’s not that easy. I was the first person that fall after just “sliding” in 2 meters from starting point. The hardest part is to wake up from the ground after falling down. Our feet were attached hard in the board, so it is difficult to move. The trainees was Japanese persons, actually they are just the member of the association, but they do really expert. They are coaching us very well with their limitation in English (but some of them are very major in English). So, after 7 times felt down, finally I felt that I am majoring country ski now and I was really enjoying it. After getting some sweat from country ski activity then we have warming party, takoyaki cooking, Setsubun festival, and enjoying Koto Music performance. Wohooo,, what a great holiday.

Not only that, in this winter season (although I still have many experiment in the lab), finally I can go to 2 the most places that I want to see in Hokkaido, they are Otaru and Hitsujigauka Observation Hill. In those two site, there also some snow festival and snow activities. Such as in Hitsujigaoka, it was held snowman making, cross country ski, snow bowling, snowball war, etc. In Otaru, there are candle fastivals. So, in the Otaru canal and some main road, some snow sculpture has made and they put the candle as the light in the night, and it is very beautiful. The candle festival in Otaru will be held until Februari 15th 2015. What a golden week! Now, I knew the feeling how to love and enjoy this cold season (sometimes I felt bad for this season), by having the snow festivalJ. The festival that will not held in my beloved country Indonesia.

Now, the hate point...
After having fun in 3 days, travelling and enjoy winter festival. This week also, some of PARE students come back to their country (They are just back on Feb 11th, 2015). From Indonesia, Caca, Mada, Ria, Rara, Dailami, Philip, Sugi had made their return to Indonesia. It is very sad. But, that’s the reality, and soon I, Nisa, Sofa, Ulfi, and Yeni will come afterward.
Hmhm,, yup, I hate to know this fact. Sometimes, you have to leave but you don't want..
But, this is the fact that I have to accept.. Ganbattene!!!

The 1-month left is very great chance for me, for completing the research and also for (still) enjoying Japan’s life. Hope I can do my best.

Goodbye Hokkaido

Engineering Faculty have their graduation exam, and at that time 5 Students whose Undergraduate in My Laboratory present about their work in last few months for the graduation exam. Everyone do their best for the presentation and after they finish their presentation, We gather in My Laboratory and Sensei give the speech, to conglaturate the students, because they finish their study and will graduate soon. After that, Sensei give me the chance to say goodbye for everyone, and then we take photo together for the last time.


Thank you very much for Chikahisa Sensei, Tabe Sensei, Suzuki Sensei for your care and teaching. and Matsukawa San, Akabori San, Yanagi San, Shimada San, Ishima San, Takagi San, Kobayashi San, Wakatake San, Horikawa San, Naoya San, Tenjinbayashi San, Azuma San, Uchiyama San, Hayashi San, Azuma San, Akazawa San for helping me in the Laboratory. and Thank you PARE program to give me the chance stay and study in Hokkaido University.

Jojo’s Diary : February Part 1_Lonely Time

            This month I have many thing to do because there are final exam and many reports. And after that I will have "Haruyusumi" or spring vacation but I also to do experiments.


            In weekend I went to many place such as Asahiyama zoo at Asahigawa, onsen and ice festival at Sounkyo, my first time to play ski at Ebetsu and Ice Festival in Susukino and Snow Festival in Odori park at Sapporo. In Snow Festival, Thai people won the snow molding competition.


            The time go very fast. My all friends who came here with me go back to Thailand already. Now only me stay here. I will miss them.

Natural Products Purification : Art Works (My partner, 2015)

Hello everyone!

My partner said that the purification of Natural Products is like an art works. Why its called art works? There are so many ways to purify a crude sample, esp natural products. All natural products begin as mixtures with other compounds from the natural source, often very complex mixtures, from which the product of interest must be isolated and purified. The isolation of a natural product refers, depending on context, either to the isolation of sufficient quantities of pure chemical matter for chemical structure elucidation, derivatization/degradation chemistry, biological testing, and other research needs. 
The methods of isolation generally involve extraction, precipitation, adsorptions, chromatography, and sometimes crystallization. Yesterday, I did column chromatography in order to isolate my target compound. And here is the pictures. It takes a long time, but this picts is pretty enough, isn't it? :D

Cultural Festival

Hello :)


Living in Sapporo has gave me priceless experience, every second is valuable moment. I learnt not only science and engineering but also social and culture. Yup! Culture is representative of society. Since Hokkaido University have many students from all over the world, I’ve got chance to learn about foreign culture, not only Japan but also other countries. In the end of year 2014, there is 忘年会 (year-end party) organised by SUIF (Sapporo Universities International Festival). We can see and enjoy other countries culture such as Thailand, Russia, Kazakhstan, Nepal, China, Korea, etc.  This is a video of interesting Russian dance in the SUIF Festival 2014.



Saturday night on February 24, there is Korean Night in Hokkaido University. In the Korean Night, there are various shows from dancing to fashion show. They also held K-pop cover dance competition. There are many participants join the dance competition which is very energetic and fashionable. In this event, Indonesian team also have a chance to involve in the dance competition.

In the Korean Night, we can see both traditional and modern culture of Korea. As we know, Korea has its contemporary culture, K-pop! There are many boyband, girlband, Korean drama, Korean reality show, etc that influence other countries especially developing countries such as Indonesia and Thailand.

In the other hand, Japanese culture has influence Indonesian people since long time ago prior to Korean culture. Japanese culture are very popular in Indonesia from cuisine to anime. You can found many Japanese restaurant, cafe and food stall in Indonesia, even though some of the taste has been adjust to Indonesian taste :p Sushi, ramen, okonomiyaki, takoyaki, teppanyaki, donburi, Japanese curry rice, udon, ocha are most popular Japanese cuisine in Indonesia. When in Indonesia, I like to enjoy Japanese cuisine. Also manga characters such as Doraemon, Hello Kitty, Pokemon and etc are favourite for Indonesian especially among kids.

Thanks for PARE Program for giving a chance studying in Hokkaido University so I’ve got such an incredible experience :)
